История иконы Николы Тульского, чудесным образом обретенной на Тульской земле, тесно переплетается с историей становления Российского государства. По преданию, икону Николая Чудотворца нашел на болотистой местности недалеко от тульского кремля днепровский казак Ермолай. Было это в начале XVI века. В честь этого замечательного события возле кремля был построен храм Николы на площади, особо почитаемый не только жителями города. Все воины, проходившие через Тулу, обычно служили молебны Николаю Чудотворцу (Тульскому) в этом храме, а затем в построенной на его месте Преображенской церкви Успенского монастыря.
Такое почитание, конечно, было не случайным. Всего три древних города на нашей русской земле могут гордиться особым покровительством Святителя Николая и имеют его именные иконы – помимо Тулы это Зарайск и Можайск.
Для Тулы этот святой образ стал подлинным заступником в 1552 году, когда, воспользовавшись тем, что практически весь военный гарнизон выступил в составе войска Ивана Грозного в поход на Казань, наш город обступило многотысячная орда крымского хана Девлет-Гирея, усиленная турками. Тула всегда была главным форпостом на южных подступах к Москве, который захватчики явно недооценивали. Перед лицом врага защитники города, собранные из оставшихся воинов и простых горожан, крестным ходом обошли стены кремля во главе с иконой Николы Тульского, моля святого о заступничестве и покровительстве. Воодушевленные молитвой туляки дали достойный отпор врагу и смогли продержаться до подхода основных войск, срочно посланных им на помощь царем Иваном Васильевичем, а затем и полностью разгромили супостатов. День 5 июля (по новому стилю), когда была вписана эта героическая страница в нашу историю, сегодня отмечается в Туле как день иконы Николы Тульского.
А защитивший Тулу от недруга образ Святителя Николая стал символом победоносного похода русских воинов на Казань. Царь Иван Васильевич, оценив великую святыню, пожелал взять с собой в поход список с тульской иконы. Это была далеко не первая попытка взять Казань, и именно она завершилась победой. Не случайно первый православный храм, возведенный на мусульманском Поволжье, был посвящен именно иконе Николы Тульского. Этот храм стал прибежищем еще одной великой православной святыни – обретенной в Казани после пожара 1579 года иконы Божьей Матери Казанской.
В истории все взаимосвязано, во всем промысел Божий. Образ Святителя Николая был обретен на тульской земле, чтобы вдохновить туляков на ратный подвиг, а затем пронести знамя православия на мусульманском востоке. В храме Николы Тульского в Казани первый праздничный молебен в честь обретенной в 1579 году иконы Казанской Божьей Матери совершил священник Ермолай, именно он переносил новоявленную икону с места обретения в церковь. Его дальнейшая судьба является таким же великим символом в истории государства российского, в сохранении Православной цивилизации. Приняв монашество, он стал митрополитом Казанским, а затем – Патриархом Московским и Всея Руси Ермогеном (Гермогеном), который, как известно, не только отверг требования поляков призвать народ к покорности и смирению, отказался благословить польских захватчиков на царствование, но и находясь в заточении, рассылал по городам грамоты с прямыми призывами к борьбе с иностранной интервенцией, к восстанию на защиту церкви и Отечества. Благословил ополчение, призванное освободить Москву от поляков. Грамоты, рассылавшиеся Патриархом по городам и селам, возбуждали русский народ к освобождению Москвы от врагов. Патриарх был подло замучен в подземелье московского Чудова монастыря в январе 1612 г. Его жизненный, православный и гражданский подвиг не пропал даром – он стал примером мужества и настоящего патриотизма, сплотил русских людей в их борьбе с окупантами, и сегодня показывает нам, как надо любить и оберегать свою Родину. Возглавляемое гражданином Мининым и князем Пожарским ополчение с иконой Казанской Божьей Матери и под стягом князя Пожарского осенью 1612 года вступило в Москву. В едином духовном и ратной порыве, в тяжелых боях, народное ополчение разбило полчища интервентов и с позором изгнало их из Москвы. Ядром ополчения стали закаленные в сечах смоляне. Соединились с ними вязьмичи, дорогобужане, служилый люд из Коломны, Гороховца и других городов. Вместе с русскими вступали в ополчение татары, чуваши, мордва, черемисы. На помощь ополчению пришли казаки. Вся Великая Русь, услышав обращение Патриарха, по зову нижегородцев – Минина и Пожарского, встала на защиты Москвы. «Купино за едино. Вместе за одно!» — эти слова стали девизом войска.
1612 год стал знаменательным и судьбоносным, поскольку тогда решалась судьба сохранения российской государственности, и само существование России было под вопросом. Когда надломился политический общественный порядок, оставались еще крепки национальные и религиозные связи: они и спасли общество. И великий русский народ прошел очередной этап самоосознания себя как единого целого, воспрял духом и, объединившись в борьбе с иноземными захватчиками, восстановил разрушенное православное государство. Есть в этом и заслуга иконы Николы Тульского! Идея национального единства и величия и сегодня как никогда актуальна для нашего общества.
